Digital Photography and Imaging - Week 1
WEEK 1: PRACTICAL
NAME: SOFIA CHEW1. Lectures
For the first lectures, Mr Fauzi gave us a brief idea about what digital photography and imaging is about. We would be heavily using Adobe Photoshop to produce image artworks as it is important for us to learn because most of the company chooses it as their working software. Alongside of that, Photoshop is also more user friendly because it provides various functions like restoration, rectifying mistakes and more. Mr Fauzi also shared some digital Imaging techniques with us like retouching, photomontage, etc. Before finishing the lectures, Mr Fauzi shared some tips for us in becoming a successful graphic designer. One of them is to find tutorials online. Mr Fauzi suggested we scroll through the IG page or reel as they tend to be short and more time efficient.
Mr Fauzi also briefed us about our course module for this semester.
2. Practical
2.1 E-portfolio set up
We were assigned to create and set up our own e-portfolio through the Blogger platform. For this e-portfolio we are required to update what we learn in our lecture class, process of completing our task and also our reflections and the feedbacks we got.
2.2 Creating a Pinterest board
During class, Mr Fauzi assigned us to create a Pinterest board under the name of DPI which stands for Digital Photography and Imaging . For this board, we will be pinning artworks that we liked or even get inspired from. It could also be a reference to the art style we want to explore. After exploring around Pinterest I eventually pinned some artwork I was fond of into my DPI board .
2.3. List down my 3 favorite graphic design + photography work
Mr Fauzi also let us choose 3 of our favorite graphic design/photography work from Pinterest. After pinning an amount of artwork into my board I find it quite hard to make a decision in picking out 3 of my favorite graphic design/photography. But I did manage to choose them in the end.
Design #1:
I liked this design especially for its details. It seems simple yet complicated at the same time, if this is created through photoshop I believe it will take quite a while plus a few layers to achieve it. For example, we need to add a layer to place the swan into the background and also edit them to ensure it doesn't stand off. It may look like there aren't a lot of swans inside but if we zoom in we will see that there are actually swans inside the tracks too which is something fascinating for me.
At first glance, this design looks like a CCTV face recognition system or maybe a touch designer surface. Although it's screaming AI, I am sure it was edited through Adobe Photoshop. I also find that some visual artists have been using something similar to this kind of edit technique lately, like a videographer by the name of rafhoo's artwork .
Design #2:
I liked this design as I find it rather quite fascinating because it overlaps 3 pictures that have the same element in a very simple way. Everything looks off yet harmonizes at the same time. I assumed it was because of the same element. I also love how the artists overlap one of the pictures using a leaf mask frame and for the soil "portal" it makes everything look logical as it signifies a portal that transports us to this "dimension". The color blue inside this artworks also stands out a lot. I feel that it lessens the aesthetic fatigue from too much green.
Design #3:
I like this design as it has a wide range of color inside and also the way it shows the text in an interesting way. The overall looks like a weaving board surface and the artist highlighted the text as the outcome of a weaving product. It's also a smart way to use lines as it makes everything more in order especially for the text.
