Digital Surrealism
Surrealism challenges logic, drawing inspiration from dreams and the subconscious to create art featuring strange imagery and unexpected juxtapositions.
Realism vs Surrealism
Realism: It focuses on ordinary, everyday subjects and themes, emphasizing the depiction of reality without exotic or extraordinary elements.
Surrealism: It is a twist on Realism, explores the subconscious by focusing on dreamlike images and distorting ordinary reality.
Instruction
Project 2B: Poster Design
For this task, we need to create a poster design that brings together different elements in a creative way. This includes using photography from DPI and adding typography and vector graphics from IVN. The goal is to combine these parts into one design that looks neat and works well as a poster.
Theme
For this project's themed, I have chosen the quote "Do What Your Heart Beats For". It's originally in German --“man macht das, wofür einem das Herz schlägt” from the movie " The Forger".
I want the design to embody the energy and joy of following one’s true passion. A character radiates vibrant hearts in red, pink, and orange, symbolizing dreams and desires bursting from within. I also want to use bold typography for the quote to amplifies the excitement and determination, while the swirling colors around the character’s heart convey a rhythmic, pulsing beat. I hope this piece inspires viewers to connect with their inner passions and live authentically, celebrating individuality and purpose.
Research and reference
I’ve drawn inspiration from the contrast between muted, grayscale tones and bright, vibrant colors to emphasize the difference between routine and following one’s passions. The references suggest that I focus on bold, impactful typography, which symbolizes strength and determination, fitting with the theme of pursuing what truly matters.
For my mood board, I imagine including visuals that blend grayscale with vibrant focal points to represent the transformation from dull survival to passionate living. These references inspire me to incorporate energy and vitality into my design.

Design Process
After showing my sketch to Mr. Fauzi, I was given green light to digitalized it. I chose to use my sister's portrait which I help to took on our previous trip.
Fig 1.4 Chosen Portrait
I did some slight editing with the chosen portrait with Adobe PS. I changed the entire picture into B&W color in order to highlight the words better. I also used the Lasso Tool to mask out a stream on the upper body to incorporate my "heart stream" design.
Fig 1.5 Edited Portrait
I added a pink color background in order to create a better outcome for the "heart stream". I also added Lens Flare effects on the heart area to signify the message of the quote.
Fig 1.6 Editing the "Heart Stream"
After designing the text and it's position using Adobe Illustrator, I exported them all into Adobe Photoshop to start blending them in.
Fig 1.7 Adjusting and repositioning the element
I used the lens flare effect to all of my layers in order to keep it's consistency.
Fig 1.8 Adjusting the Lens Flare
After all of the lens flare adjustment, I did some slight blending adjustment before finalizing my work.

Previous outcome
I actually designed two demo before carrying out my finalization. I showed them in class for both Mr. Fauzi and Mr. Hafiz. Both told me that the second design was better. Mr Fauzi's feedback was that the position of the word placement may easily misread so I did take note about it and try to rearrange my placement for my final design. Mr. Hafiz's feedback was that the words can have more layers as the current design seems to be place in the same layers and it seems to make the overall look flat.
